Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins

A visit today will show you a quiet fishing village where there between 975 and 1842 have been different trading centres, sultanates and fortresses built by different nationalities, like Portuguese and Omani.

Kilwa Kisiwani means “Kilwa on the island” - and a guided tour there starts with a sail trip in a traditional Dhow, or less attractive, a motorboat.

You will be guided through the old Arabic fort, the ruins of the beautiful mosque and a lot of other ruins.

On your walk through the remains from ancient history, the guide will talk you through more than 1000 years of intriguing history.
