The Great Wildebeest Migration: Africa's Greatest Wildlife Spectacle

Serengeti Great Migration Guide

What is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest land animal migration on Earth and one of the most remarkable natural events in the world. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, travel across the vast ecosystems of Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing and water.

The Mara River Crossing

The Mara River crossing is often considered the highlight of the Great Migration. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather along the riverbanks before attempting dangerous crossings. The event is unpredictable and dramatic, with strong currents, steep banks, and Nile crocodiles creating one of nature's most powerful wildlife spectacles.

The Calving Season

Between January and March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu. This period attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and other predators, creating exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities and some of the best safari photography conditions in Africa.
